Mrs Hurren’s Chelmsford home had been suffering from damp for a while, so she sought advice on how to prevent it from spreading. She was advised that the Herts Essex Energy Partnership (HEEP) could offer her the best solution, by installing solid wall insulation.

The walls in Mrs.Hurren’s living room had been developing damp patches and had even begun to crack.

Mrs Hurren said; “I live in a small bungalow built in 1930, so it’s not very energy efficient and it gets cold veryeasily. I was advised to contact HEEP as I was eligible for a grant to install external solid wall to my property.

Mrs. Hurren contacted the partnership and applied for a grant for external solid wall. As she was in receipt of a qualifying benefit, Mrs Hurren was eligible to have the insulation carried out.

HEEP is a Government funded and councilapproved scheme made up of 15 local authorities, including Chelmsford. These authorities are working together to tackle fuel poverty and to make your home more efficient.
Solid wall insulation is an effective way to stop wasting energy and money at home. Around 45% of heat is lost through an un-insulated solid wall. By externally insulating her walls, Mrs Hurren could save around £375 a year on her fuel bills and cut the carbon emissions
released from her house by enough to fill over 10 double decker busses every year.

Mrs. Hurren said; “I applied in April and it was only a month until installation, it was terrific. The installers were wonderful too, they arrived early and just got on with the job. There was no mess left and I didn’t have to do a thing - they even put in new window sill’s for me.

The insulation really has given the house a new lease of life. It has been much warmer and the damp spots have even receded. I have also noticed that it stops the noise from the passing traffic.
Before I found out about the grant I was quoted £7,000 for the insulation – I would never have been able to afford that. I feel very fortunate to have benefited from the HEEP Partnership.
I have recommended it to all my friends and I would recommend everyone to see if they qualify for a measure under the scheme.”
